Maruti Suzuki has launched the S-CNG variant of the new fourth-generation Swift. This analysis focuses on the transition from the old K-Series 4-cylinder engine to the new Z-Series 3-cylinder unit, evaluating real-world refinement, mileage, and boot space packaging.
For the Indian car buyer, the Maruti Suzuki Swift is an institution. When the fourth-generation Swift was launched earlier this year, it brought a sharper design, a more premium cabin, and a brand-new engine family. However, a significant portion of the Indian audience was waiting for one specific badge to appear on its tailgate: the S-CNG badge.
Maruti Suzuki has now launched the Swift S-CNG. But this launch comes with a major technological shift. The older Swift CNG relied on the highly refined, 4-cylinder K-Series engine. The new model uses the Z-Series 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder engine. Can a 3-cylinder unit match the legendary smoothness and drivability of the old engine, while still delivering the class-leading fuel economy Maruti is famous for? Let us break down the engineering and the economics.
The Refinement Question: 3 Cylinders vs. 4 Cylinders
Three-cylinder engines are inherently unbalanced compared to four-cylinder layouts, which can lead to higher vibrations, especially at idle. To combat this in the Z-Series engine, Maruti Suzuki engineers have used optimized engine mounts and balanced flywheels to damp out harshness.
In the real world, while there is a slight, characteristic three-cylinder thrum when you start the car or rev it hard, the cabin remains remarkably quiet at city speeds. When running on CNG, the engine produces 69.75 PS of power and 101.8 Nm of torque. While this is a drop from its petrol output (82 PS / 111.7 Nm), Maruti has tuned the torque delivery to be concentrated lower down in the rev range. This means you do not have to constantly downshift while driving in heavy, stop-and-go bumper-to-bumper traffic.
Class-Leading Efficiency: The Math that Matters
The main reason anyone buys an S-CNG vehicle is running cost. The new Swift S-CNG delivers an incredible ARAI-certified mileage of 32.85 km/kg. This is an improvement over the older model, making it one of the most fuel-efficient cars on Indian roads today.
| Parameter | Old Swift CNG (3rd Gen) | New Swift S-CNG (4th Gen) |
| Engine Type | 1.2L K-Series, 4-Cylinder | 1.2L Z-Series, 3-Cylinder |
| Power (CNG Mode) | 77.49 PS @ 6000 rpm | 69.75 PS @ 5700 rpm |
| Torque (CNG Mode) | 98.5 Nm @ 4300 rpm | 101.8 Nm @ 2900 rpm |
| ARAI Fuel Efficiency | 30.90 km/kg | 32.85 km/kg |
| CNG Tank Packaging | Single Large Tank in Boot | Single Large Tank in Boot (No Dual-Tank) |
| Starting Price (Ex-showroom) | Rs. 7.85 Lakh (Discontinued) | Rs. 8.19 Lakh (VXi Variant) |
The Boot Space Compromise: No Dual-Cylinder Magic Yet
One area where Maruti Suzuki has missed an opportunity is boot space packaging. Competitors like Tata Motors have pioneered the “dual-cylinder technology,” which splits the large, bulky CNG cylinder into two smaller tanks placed under the boot floor, freeing up usable luggage space.
Maruti, however, has stuck to its traditional single-tank setup in the Swift S-CNG. The large 60-liter water-capacity tank occupies almost the entire trunk, leaving very little space for weekend luggage. You can fit a couple of soft duffle bags, but family airport runs will require utilizing the rear seats for luggage. This makes the Swift S-CNG strictly a city commuter rather than a long-distance family tourer.
No More Variant Discrimination
Historically, manufacturers only offered CNG options on stripped-down, bare-bones entry-level variants. Maruti Suzuki has broken this trend. The Swift S-CNG is offered in three trims: VXi, VXi (O), and the feature-loaded ZXi.
This means you do not have to sacrifice modern creature comforts to get low running costs. In the ZXi trim, you get premium features like a 7-inch SmartPlay Pro touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, alloy wheels, LED projector headlamps, a wireless phone charger, and six airbags as standard.
The Verdict: A Rational City Commuter
If you are looking for a stylish, modern hatchback with low running costs for daily city commuting, the Maruti Suzuki Swift S-CNG is highly compelling. It traded a bit of 4-cylinder smoothness for class-leading fuel economy and better low-end torque, and for the vast majority of Indian buyers, that is a trade-off they will gladly accept.
