When you look at today’s global SUV market, two names from the same Korean family stand out – Kia Motors and Hyundai and both sell their vehicle in India. Soon from Kia — the premium, three-row Kia Sorento and from Hyundai – the compact, urban-focused Hyundai Bayon will be launched in India. While both carry modern design and technology, they cater to very different buyers. One is built for families and long-distance comfort, while the other is designed for city life and efficiency.

Let’s take a closer look at both vehicles in a simple, practical way.

Kia Sorento: A Practical Premium Family SUV

The Kia Sorento has evolved into a well-rounded mid-size SUV that blends space, technology, and performance. It sits above compact SUVs and offers three rows of seating, making it ideal for larger families or those who frequently travel with passengers.

From the outside, the Sorento looks bold yet refined. The latest versions feature Kia’s big signature grille, sharp LED lighting, and a more upright stance that gives it a strong road presence. It’s not overly catchy but it definitely feels premium.

Inside, the cabin is where the Sorento really excel. The dashboard is clean and modern, highlighted by a large 12.3-inch infotainment display, digital instrument cluster, and high-quality materials. There’s ample space across all three rows, though the third row is best suited for kids or short journeys. The SUV can seat up to seven passengers comfortably.

Under the hood, the Sorento offers multiple powertrain options globally. The standard engine is a 2.5-litre petrol producing around 191 hp, while a turbocharged version pushes power up to 281 hp. There are also hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants, which deliver better efficiency without compromising performance.

On the road, the Sorento feels stable and confident. It’s not a sporty SUV, but it delivers a comfortable ride and decent handling for its size. Features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring come standard in many markets, making it a safe and tech-rich option.

The Sorento’s biggest strength is its versatile nature. It can handle daily commuting, long road trips, and even light off-road duties depending on the variant.

Hyundai Bayon: A Smart Urban Crossover

On the other end, the Hyundai Bayon is a much smaller and simpler SUV designed primarily for city use. Built on the same platform as the i20, it focuses on practicality, efficiency, and affordability.

The design of the Bayon is quite distinctive. The front features a split-headlamp setup with slim LED DRLs, while the rear has a unique arrow-shaped tail lamp design. It’s not a conventional-looking car and can stand out in traffic with its distinct features.

Step inside, and you’ll find a clean, functional cabin. The highlight is the dual-screen layout — a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the overall layout is user-friendly.

Performance is where the Bayon keeps things simple. It uses a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine producing around 90–100 hp. While it’s not fast, it is efficient and perfectly suited for city driving. Acceleration is modest, taking around 11–13 seconds to reach 100 km/h, depending on the variant.

Fuel efficiency is one of its strong points, with figures close to 17–18 km/l in real-world conditions.

In terms of ride quality, the Bayon is easy to drive and maneuver in tight spaces. However, compared to larger SUVs, it may feel less refined on rough roads, which is expected in this segment.
