The legendary Mitsubishi Pajero is finally back. After being discontinued in global markets in 2021, the famous SUV has returned in an all-new fifth-generation form. Mitsubishi officially unveiled the new Pajero on September 2, 2026, bringing back the name with a much more modern design, new technology and serious off-road hardware.

Mitsubishi Pajero 2026 Design

The new Pajero keeps the strong and boxy shape that made the name famous. It gets a tall bonnet, an upright front end, large wheel arches and a bold grille. The LED lighting gives it a modern look, while the overall shape still feels like a proper off-road SUV. Mitsubishi has clearly tried to keep the old Pajero’s tough character while making the new model look ready for the modern SUV market.

The SUV is 4,920mm long, 1,925mm wide and 1,910mm tall. It has a 2,870mm wheelbase and an impressive 230mm ground clearance. These numbers should help the Pajero handle rough roads, stones and deep bumps without scraping its underside.

2.4-Litre Diesel Engine and 4WD

Under the bonnet, the 2026 Pajero uses a newly developed 2.4-litre four-cylinder clean-diesel engine with a variable-geometry turbocharger. Mitsubishi says it produces a maximum 480Nm of torque, giving the SUV strong pulling power. Power is sent through a new eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The Pajero also gets Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system. This is one of the most important parts of the SUV because it helps send power to the wheels with the best grip. The combination of a ladder-frame chassis, four-wheel drive and long-travel suspension makes the Pajero much more than a city SUV.

Serious Off-Road Ability

Off-road driving is where the Pajero should be at its best. The SUV has a strong ladder frame and specially developed suspension designed to keep the tyres in contact with the ground over uneven surfaces. Its approach angle is 30.4 degrees, while the ramp breakover angle is 22.6 degrees and the departure angle is 25.8 degrees.

Mitsubishi has also focused on making the new Pajero comfortable on normal roads. So, while it can tackle difficult trails, it is not designed only for adventure trips. The company says the suspension and chassis have been developed to provide better road comfort as well.

Spacious Seven-Seat Interior

Inside, the new Pajero gets a major technology upgrade compared with the old model. It offers three rows of seats and can carry up to seven people. Mitsubishi has paid special attention to the third row, with improved space and easier entry and exit.

The cabin also brings modern digital screens and a smartphone-friendly infotainment system. One interesting feature is the new Multi-Meter, which takes inspiration from the triple gauges of older Pajero models. It can show information such as altitude, compass direction, temperature and the vehicle’s pitch and roll angles.

Safety and Technology

The new Pajero is also much more advanced in terms of safety. Higher versions are reported to get features such as multiple airbags, a 360-degree camera and advanced driver assistance systems. The available camera system can also provide an under-bonnet view, which could be very useful when driving over rocks or other difficult obstacles.

Mitsubishi Pajero 2026 India Launch

For Indian buyers, there is disappointing news. Mitsubishi has not planned an India launch for the new Pajero at present. The SUV will first go on sale in Thailand, followed by Japan and Australia during fiscal 2026. From fiscal 2027, Mitsubishi plans to expand the Pajero to around 100 countries, but India is currently not included in the confirmed list.

Final Verdict

The 2026 Mitsubishi Pajero is a proper comeback for one of the world’s best-known off-road SUV names. Its ladder-frame construction, 2.4-litre diesel engine, 480Nm torque, eight-speed automatic gearbox, S-AWC four-wheel drive and seven-seat cabin give it a strong mix of toughness and comfort. It could become an interesting rival to SUVs such as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Ford Everest in international markets. For Indian fans, however, the biggest problem is simple: there is currently no confirmed India launch
