VinFast VF 8: Can This Vietnamese Electric SUV Challenge the Big Players?

The electric car world is changing fast, and one brand that is trying to make a big name for itself is VinFast. Coming from Vietnam, VinFast is expanding globally with several electric vehicles, and one of its most talked-about models is the VinFast VF 8. This mid-size electric SUV has bold styling, modern technology, and a lot of ambition. But does it have what it takes to compete with popular electric SUVs like the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5?

A Stylish SUV with a Premium Look

The first thing you notice about the VinFast VF 8 is its design. It looks modern, sharp, and premium. The SUV was designed by Pininfarina, the famous Italian design company known for working with luxury brands like Ferrari. That explains why the VF 8 has a sleek and upscale appearance. At the front, the VF 8 features VinFast’s signature “V” shaped LED lighting, giving it a unique identity. The clean body lines and sporty stance make it look futuristic. It definitely stands out on the road and doesn’t look like a beginner’s attempt from a new car company.

Inside, the cabin feels spacious and modern. The dashboard is minimal, with most controls placed inside a large 15.6-inch touchscreen. Instead of a traditional instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, all information appears on this central screen, similar to what Tesla does.

Powerful Electric Performance

The VinFast VF 8 comes with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system as standard, which means all versions get power sent to all four wheels.

The base Eco variant produces around 349 horsepower, while the more powerful Plus version delivers 402 horsepower. That’s enough power to make the VF 8 feel quick and exciting. The SUV can go from 0 to 100 km/h in around 5.5 to 6 seconds, which is impressive for a family SUV.The VF 8 uses an 87.7 kWh battery pack, offering an estimated driving range of 235 to 256 miles (around 378 to 412 km) depending on the version. For daily driving and weekend trips, that should be enough for most people.

Fast charging is another useful feature. VinFast says the VF 8 can charge from 10% to 70% in about 31 minutes using a DC fast charger. That makes long-distance travel much easier.

Packed with Technology

Technology is one of the strongest selling points of the VF 8. The SUV comes loaded with features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, over-the-air software updates, and a smartphone app that lets owners control certain functions remotely.Safety technology is also impressive. Features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and a 360-degree camera are all included as standard. These advanced driver-assistance features help make driving safer and less stressful.

VinFast also offers premium touches like vegan leather seats, ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof, and heated and ventilated seats in higher trims.

Could the VF 8 Come to India?

There is growing speculation that the VinFast VF 8 could arrive in India soon. VinFast is already investing in India and setting up local operations, which suggests serious plans for the market. Recent reports also mention an updated VF 8 with a claimed 500 km range, which could make it even more attractive for Indian buyers.

If VinFast prices the VF 8 competitively, it could challenge premium EVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and BYD Sealion 7.

Final Thoughts

The VinFast VF 8 is an ambitious electric SUV from a company that wants to make a global impact. It offers stylish design, strong performance, impressive technology, and good range. For a new car brand, that’s an impressive start. However, early software issues and quality concerns mean it still has some growing up to do. If VinFast can continue improving the VF 8 and build strong customer trust, this SUV could become a serious player in the electric vehicle market.

For now, the VF 8 feels like a bold first step—promising, exciting, but not yet perfect.
