The electric vehicle market in India is evolving very fast, especially in the two-wheeler segment. Here Bajaj, Hero and TVS have already taken lead and launched products and now One of the biggest names to enter this space is Yamaha Motor Company, with its first electric scooter – the Yamaha EC-06.

Introduction: Yamaha’s First Electric Scooter

The Yamaha EC-06 is the brand’s first electric two-wheeler in India. It has been developed with a focus on daily urban commuting. Interestingly, the scooter is based on the platform of the River Indie, which gives it a strong foundation in terms of performance and practicality.

Yamaha has priced the EC-06 at around ₹1.67 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), placing it in the premium electric scooter category.

Design and Styling

The Yamaha EC-06 comes with a modern and slightly bulky and bold design compared to traditional scooters. It looks different than other scooters in its segment and due to its unique boxy looks, may attract young buyers.

The scooter has a strong road presence and feels more like a maxi-style scooter rather than a typical lightweight EV launched by established brands.

Performance and Battery

Performance is one of the most important aspects of any electric scooter, and Yamaha has focused on making the EC-06 suitable for everyday use.

  • IPMSM electric motor
  • Peak power of 6.7 kW and torque of around 26 NM

This setup allows the EC-06 to deliver smooth acceleration and decent performance for everyday city riding.

  • Claimed range: 169 km per charge
  • Top speed: 79 km/h

This range is quite impressive and is better than many scooters in the same segment and this long range gives confidence to buyers of EV and reduces their range anxiety.

Charging and Practicality

Charging is simple and can be done at home.

  • Charging time (0–100%): ~10 hours
  • Charging time (0–80%): ~8 hours

The battery is fixed like OLA and TVS, so you cannot remove it for charging however, home charging convenience makes it easy for daily users.

Features and Technology

Yamaha has equipped the EC-06 with useful features, though it is not overloaded with high-end tech and priority has been given for most used and required features rather than gimmicks.

  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Mobile app support
  • Three riding modes: Eco, Standard, Power
  • Reverse mode (very useful in tight parking)
  • USB Type-C charging port

To top it, the scooter also offers a decent 24.5-litre under-seat storage, which is practical for daily use and can store a full size helmet and small hand bag aswell.

Ride and Handling

The Yamaha EC-06 is designed to handle Indian roads comfortably.

  • Disc brakes at both ends

It also comes with a Combi Braking System (CBS) for better safety.The larger wheels give better stability compared to smaller scooters, especially on rough roads.

Though Yamaha EV is loaded with necessary features however still has its Negatives which includes;

  • Charging time is slightly long
  • Fixed battery (not removable) , not suitable for Multistory living people
  • Slightly expensive compared to rivals like Ola and TVS
  • Limited colour options as if now
